The styles described in the two chapters before were extreme forms, the two poles of a redundancy (see chapter "Technique - Calculi - Redundancy"). The actually choosen form might be inbetween them.

I think, no one of the two styles can be used purely. They are two theoretical possibilities. The real movement is somewhere between, with preference here or there.
The arm cannot be moved in a real plane. It must dodge sideward, away from the body. This brings space into play, which isn't contained in the picture.
