Axtwerfen   - Technik   - From Grip to Throw   -

Step 3:   Wheel

Logo of chapter

The rotation is exactly like with a full throw, only the travelled distance is zero.

Practice this step only, if you master previous step with routine!

In contrast to a full forward throw you have still the advantage, that with catching, the mistakes of throwing may be corrected. If you do not need that correcting any more, but the object drops into the resting hand, then you got it.

Wheel figure
Forward wheel with two rotations with the small axe at about 0.7 yard distance. The "distance" is not really zero for safety reasons.   Download video as AVI 546 KB or as MPG 130 KB.   The video was captured by www.dr-hook.de.

Here the detailled description of the ongoings:

Second 0.0: When attempting the throw, the ongoing comes naturally, with the target as point of attention. But the target (the own hand) is only one of many objects in the picture, the other objects are covered by the normal security rules for knife throwing.

Second 0.1: The release of the device results in no surprise. It is flying, as expected, to the apex of the wanted trayectory.

Second 0.2: You can study the position of the device in real time and slow motion, floating through the apex. You can predict its further way. You are precisely aligned with the time beat. You can already 'hear' the clap of the catch at the next beat.

Second 0.3: There is time enough to make a backup plan for refuge. You made sure that nothing is around to disturb you from outside.

Second 0.4: The catching begins with a light touch. This is possible because the hand moves in a spiral 'parallel' to the rotating object. Only then it comes closer to a grip, first loose, then tighter. Evertything all right? Then really pack.

Second 0.5: You've got the device in a moving but solid grip. The device is slowed down, and driven back to its starting position in a most soft curve.

Voila.

Read also chapter "Security - Rules for Catching".

Whether the target then is your own hand for catching, or a far log wood for sticking, that difference might be not so big anymore.

Wanted is to do this throw blindly. The crucial thing is, that you then have an even better source for gravitational and rotational information, then the eyes and the balance sense can give you.

Regarding to the way from zero to many yards distance, there is a continuous transition as well. First very neare, e.g. 10 cm on the edge of the table, then 20 cm an so on.

Warning   Do not exercise this with sharp devices!
