History is thick with examples of Axe use, in many warrior cultures the axe was a specialist weapon specifically for the elite warriors classes.
There are stories about Anglo Saxon "HouseKarls" in 1060's who could cut down an armoured Norman knight on horseback with such kind of axe ... "killing the horse with his first stroke and then the knight with his second stroke, as they charged at him". The technique involved a long handled Dane Axe being swung in a figure "8" pattern at high speed and moved into the path of a charging knight.
Smaller such axes were also thrown.
