The ball is a device made only for throwing and catching.   Ein Ball ist ein Gerät, das speziell zum Werfen und Fangen gemacht ist.

The word ballistics comes from ball.   Das Wort Ballistik kommt von Ball.

The high symmetry of a ball has advantages not only for handling, but also when hitting or beeing reflected, resp. The direction, in which the ball is reflected, may be told exactlx, becaus it does not matter, how the ball hits. This effect is used in many sports systematically, e.g. in squash or billard.   Die hohe Symmetrie des Balles hat nicht nur Vorteile bei der Handhabung, sondern auch beim Auftreffen bzw. Abprallen. Die Richtung, in die er abprallt, kann genau vorhergesagt werden, da es keine Rolle spielt, wie der Ball aufkommt. Diese Eigenschaft des Balles wird in vielen Sportarten systematisch genutzt, z.B. beim Squash oder Billard.
